A Day in Thessaloniki

If you dream of a Mediterranean city that blends history, seaside views, and incredible food, you should definitely visit Thessaloniki. In this guide, I’ll show you how to spend the perfect day there – what to do and where to eat. Because honestly, if you don’t sit in a traditional taverna, it’s like you haven’t truly experienced Greece.

Morning: Start by the Sea

Start your day with a walk along the waterfront promenade near the iconic White Tower of Thessaloniki. Grab a coffee and sit by the water, enjoying the calm atmosphere.

Greeks love slow mornings, and Thessaloniki is the perfect place for that. Don’t rush – there’s plenty of time to see everything.

You can also go inside the White Tower. Just buy a ticket and head to the top for a beautiful panoramic view of the sea and the city.

Late Morning: Explore Ano Poli

Next, head up to Ano Poli (the Old Town), where you’ll find traditional houses, quiet streets, and one of the best views over Thessaloniki. It’s the perfect place to slow down and take in the atmosphere.

Lunch: Greek Food is a Must

Now it’s time for lunch – and I hope you like seafood, because Greece is one of the best places for it.

If you go to a restaurant, I suggest ordering:

  • Tzatziki
  • Bougiourdi (baked feta with tomatoes and peppers)
  • Fresh seafood

Or, if you prefer something more casual, sit by the sea and grab a gyros or souvlaki – it will still be amazing.

Afternoon: Walk, Shop & Treat Yourself

After lunch, take some time to explore the city. Walk through the busy shopping streets and head to Aristotelous Square, the main square of the city.

After shopping, get something sweet – you have to try Loukoumades. They are deep-fried dough balls, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and drizzled with honey and cinnamon.

Sunset & Boat Experience

As the afternoon turns into evening, make your way back to the waterfront. The sunset in Thessaloniki is truly special, with warm colors reflecting on the sea and creating a calm atmosphere.

Right in front of the White Tower, you’ll see several boats offering short cruises (around 30 minutes). One I’ve personally tried had free entry – you just need to buy a drink.

I recommend getting a cocktail and enjoying the fresh air. There’s usually music, which makes the experience even better. From my experience, they run both in summer and winter, depending on the weather.

Evening: Dinner & Nightlife

After your boat ride, head to the Ladadika district, one of the liveliest areas in Thessaloniki, full of restaurants and bars.

You can choose almost any taverna, but one place I personally recommend is Akratos Oinos. If you want something different, try orzo pasta with beef cooked in red sauce – it’s delicious.

After dinner, Ladadika is perfect for nightlife. There are plenty of bars and clubs if you feel like partying. One popular spot is Naomi Club.

If you prefer something more relaxed, you can visit a nearby sky bar for beautiful views and creative cocktails.

Final Thoughts

Spending a day in Thessaloniki is about more than just sightseeing – it’s about experiencing the rhythm of the city. From relaxed mornings by the sea to lovely evenings filled with food and music, Thessaloniki offers a little bit of everything.

And once you visit, you’ll definitely want to come back.
